Saltburn Railway Station

This genuine steel totem (sign) was taken from Saltburn station at some point in it's recent past, and fetched over £3,000 at an auction last year. It is coloured in the North Easterns standard tangerine and white.

Exterior of the Station Buildings

The look of the outside, or road side of the station building has remained almost the same since the time it was built, apart from some of the window frames being altered, a couple of doors added, and of course a damn good clean.

The roundabout in front of the station building hasn't always been there - just a small post by the look of it here. But notice also the Brine Baths (sea water) in the background, and the large canopy over the station platforms. Just peeking into the picture on the left, is a building where Wetherals furniture showroom now stands.

A wander through the station building arches, past the old ticket office, reveals a view that is completely different from what it used to be.

The ticket office itself is now the health food shop, the wooden floorboards have been replaced with concrete, and the turn styles have been removed too.

You can just see in this picture an old style (gas?) lamp suspended between the glass panes, which now no longer have glass in them.

This picture was taken standing on the very edge of the platform, with your back to the track.

Here we have a view from what is now Jackie's, looking back towards the Zetland Hotel. You will notice the track carries on past the station, and right up to the back of the Zetland.

A wander down towards the Zetland, and you can still see the station platform edge today as it curves slightly and enters a canopy at the rear of the Zetland.

The wall on the left is gone, and so is the roof. In place of the wall we now have the Consteel building.

Here we have a view a little further towards the Zetland, showing the platform edge, but with the track long since removed. The short wall on the right is now housing for the elderly.

Interesting to note the breach in both walls, allowing pedestrian access from Milton Street to Dundas Street, and a well worn path by the look of it.

There was once a subway linking the two, and if you wander along there today, you can still see the filled in entrance on Milton Street side.

Here a a selection of interesting photos of the station roof being demolished to make way for Somerfield. I recall a story at the time that Hinton's (now Sainsburys/Bells) was closing and being rebuilt here, but when it opened it was called Gateway. I was young at the time, but it always puzzled me why it wasn't called Hinton's. Perhaps the story was just rubbish - does anyone else remember this story ?

Interesting to note the Tourist Information was originally bricked up with only a small man-door.

Notice the railings on the platform

Curious building to the right of this picture - anyone know what they were used for. Now underneath Somerfield. Also notice in the background the inverted canopy on the part of the station platform that still remains. Notice how it is different in the much earlier photograph at the top of this page.

Zetland Mews

One part of the railways buildings, and now converted into a row of terraced houses.
